Police scanners

police scanners
Police scanners are nice to have because they are something different from TV and radio. You can sit in your backyard and understand why the police are going up the road

All last Saturday night, and I was sitting at home listening to a police radio scanner. My good buddy Joe was with me. We often sit around and listen to police scanners radio. You see, both of us are very interested in the practice of law enforcement. We have both been hassled by the cops multiple times because of the way we look. We dress in ripped jeans, have multiple piercing, and color our hair in purples and oranges. Although I realize how much work police jobs can be for some people, I think that the power goes to their heads and they often abuse their rights.

Many times, there are announcements on a police scanner before any TV stations get a hold of the information (hurricanes for example)

Listening to the police scanner almost seems like a little bit of covert revenge to us. Although shows like Cops claim to portray accurately what police officers do on a day-to-day basis, they are carefully cut to leave out details that might be uncomfortable. Police scanners, however, tell the whole story. Listening to police frequency scanners, we have heard what goes on during bank robberies, domestic disputes, drugstore holdups, and many other kinds of crimes. It is amazing how the police talk when they think no one is listening. The police scanners are extremely revealing, and if America as a whole listened to them, I think they would have a very different attitude towards the cops.

When I first began to listen to the police scanners, it didn't mean much to me. You really need police scanner codes to make sense of it. The problem is that different police departments use different codes. Although you hear certain codes over and over again in the popular media (such as 10-4), In reality there is no standardization of police code. What might mean murder in one department might mean "I'm Taking a break to get a cup of coffee" in another. Fortunately, once you have listened to police scanners for a little while, you start to figure out most of the codes pretty quickly. You can even download scanner codes from the Internet in some areas, but they are not always completely accurate.

If you have never listened to police scanners, you really should. As a citizen of this country, I consider it my duty to be informed about the activities of its government, its law enforcement, and its elected officials. Police scanners are just one of many tools to help me do just that.
